Birthdays (both mine and others) have always been one of my favorite occasions. You get to surround yourself with friends, family, and cake, but I also find they’re a good time to take a moment and look back at what you’ve learned during the past year.

Although I learned countless lessons this year, I’ve trimmed it down to twenty two little life tidbits to share with all of you. Some are insightful, and some are just plain obvious. My hope is that by reading these, you may learn something that you can apply to your own life, or at least get a good laugh out of them.

22 Things I Learned at Twenty Two

  1. You really don’t have to do every single reading
  2. You can have a great time in Vegas without drinking
  3. You can have a great time in Disneyland if you aren’t 12
  4. Be kind to people even if you don’t want to
  5. You don’t have to be friends with everyone
  6. You don’t have to accept every invitation to hang out
  7. Chocolate can cure almost anything
  8. You’ll change your mind about a lot of things, and that’s okay
  9. Not everything needs to be perfect
  10. It’s okay to take breaks. In fact, it’s necessary
  11. If you want to do something, DO IT (cue Shia Labeouf video)
  12. Get creative every day, even if it’s only for ten minutes
  13. Enjoy the little things. Milkshakes at 11pm with people you care about are an excellent choice
  14. Find something you’re passionate about and stick with it
  15. Drink lots of water. Seriously. This shouldn’t be something you need to relearn
  16. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and give you energy
  17. Not everyone is going to like you, and that’s okay
  18. Nobody has their shit together at 22. If they do, they’re lying
  19. You’re allowed to eat dessert every day if you want to
  20. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Don’t take anything too seriously
  21. Cats are some of the best listeners out there
  22. Everything is temporary
